The Teekay LNG carrier Galicia Spirit was attacked by RPG fire near
Bab al-Mandab waterway on 8 nautical miles off Perim Island, Yemen.
Heavy armed men in a skiff approached the vessel from the Yemen coast
and fired an rocket propelled grenade (RPG) over the large gas carrier.
Fortunately, the vessel was not seriously damaged and the fire did not
caused explosion. Also there were no injured people on board.
The LNG
carrier Galicia Spirit suffered only slight damages and resumed the
voyage. The accident was reported to the navy and security forces in the
region, which started investigation for the accident.
According to the official statement of the shipping operator Teekay,
the LNG carrier Galicia Spirit was under piracy attack and crew managed
to avoid hijacking, but was fired by RPG.
All the crew were accounted
without injuries. During the accident the ship was proceeding through
the Bab al-Mandab waterway without security guards on board.
“As a precaution, the vessel had a Djibouti warship in attendance
when heading away from the area. She has now left the high risk area
without any further issues”, added Teekay in the statement.
The Royal Navy’s UK Maritime Trade Operation sent a notice to
mariners that the incident was still being investigated, as is the
alleged use of RPG.
All the vessels are asked to increase security
level, during passage through the Bab al-Mandab waterway and to keep
away from the Yemen coast and preventive measure.
The LNG carrier Galicia Spirit (IMO: 9247364) was en route from
Ras Laffan, UAE to Sokhna, Egypt. The vessel has overall length of
280.00 m, moulded beam of 43.00 m and maximum draft of 11.10 m. The
deadweight of the gas carrier is 79,166 DWT and the gross tonnage is
94,822 GRT.
