Pirates kidnapped 12 members of a Swiss merchant vessel crew in Nigerian waters on Saturday morning, the ship’s operator said in a statement. The MV Glarus was en route from the Nigerian capital of Lagos to the southeastern city of Port Harcourt carrying a parcel of bulk wheat when it came under attack by the pirate gang, Massoel Shipping told Global News in a statement. “It is understood the pirate gang boarded the Glarus by means of long ladders and cut the razor wire on deck to gain access to the vessel and eventually the bridge,” the Swiss shipping giant said. The pirates then destroyed the ship’s communications equipment before making off with 12 of the 19 crew members.

Saudi Arabia is reported to have purchased the Iron Dome missile defence system from Israel signaling a rapprochement between the two countries, according to several diplomatic sources quoted in  Al-Khaleej Online . Saudi Arabia not only wants political convergence with Israel, said the sources, but also seeks to reach a level where it publically purchases heavy and developed weapons from Tel Aviv like the UAE does. WASHINGTON  The U.S. Army has begun to accept new AH-64E Apache attack helicopters from Boeing after halting deliveries due to a safety concern , according to Brig. Gen. Thomas Todd, the service’s program executive officer for aviation. The Army was able to resume accepting Apaches into the fleet on Aug. 31, Todd told Defense News in a Sept. 10 statement. Defense News broke the news in April that the Army stopped accepting AH-64Es into its fleet the month prior because it was not confident in the durability of the helicopter’s strap pack nut, a “critical safety” item. The strap pack nut holds very large bolts that subsequently hold the rotor blades on the helicopter. The Army was unhappy with the performance of the nuts in severe coastal environments and saw corrosion due to climate and stress during routine safety inspections of the fleet.

'Έχουμε αναφερθεί αρκετές φορές στις αντιρρήσεις και δισταγμούς από μερίδα ναυτιλιακών κύκλων σε ότι αφορά την τοποθέτηση scrubbers στα πλοία. Σήμερα ένα καινούργιο πεδίο δισταγμών διαφαίνεται να ωριμάζει και αφορά τον προβληματισμό που αφορά την λειτουργία των open-loop scrubbers. Ο δισταγμός περιτοιχίζεται γύρω από το γεγονός στο πώς θα αντιμετωπίσει σε μελλοντικό χρόνο η ναυτιλία τυχόν αυστηρότερη νομοθεσία σχετικά με την χρήση του θαλάσσιου νερού ως αποταμιευτήρα καταλοίπων. Ως γνωστόν τα open - loop scrubbers μεταφέρουν την μόλυνση από τον αέρα στην θάλασσα ! Τα περισσότερα πλοία αυτή την στιγμή έχουν εφοδιασθεί με open - loop scrubbers.

Ενώ στον ΟΗΕ έχει ξεκινήσει ο διάλογος για την νομοθεσία η οποία πρέπει στο μέλλον να διέπει τις ανοιχτές θάλασσες, τον ερχόμενο μήνα αναμένουμε με πολύ ενδιαφέρον το ετήσιο συνέδριο με την ονομασία  "Ο Διάλογος του Γκάλλε" στην νευραλγικής σημασίας για την διεθνή ναυσιπλοΐα νήσο της Σρι - Λάνκα. Αν και η Ελλάδα έχει προσκληθεί, μέχρι στιγμής τουλάχιστον, κανείς δεν έχει εκδηλώσει ενδιαφέρον από τα στελέχη του Ελληνικού κράτους να παρευρεθεί. The new port of Colombo Port of Colombo The Port of Colombo, the largest and busiest port in Sri Lanka as well as in South Asia, is located on the south-western shores on the Kelani River; it serves as an important terminal in Asia due to its strategic location on the Indian Ocean trade routes. During the 1980s, the port underwent rapid modernization and gained a capacity of 4.1 million TEUs. Today’s upgrade will increase the ports capacity to 12 million TEUs by the end of 2014. The new port entrance channel and breakwater has been designed to allow a further extension northwards which would raise capacity by a further 4 million TEUs. Between 70 and 80 per cent of the TEUs handled by the port are transhipped to other ports in the region. Θα μπορούσε ένα   τηλεφώνημα  διαμαρτυρίας για μείωση ταχύτητας να καταστρέψει ένα  πλοίο ; Η ζωή, εξυφαίνει σενάρια τα οποία ξεπερνούν και την πλέον δημιουργική φαντασία. Συνήθως οι στατιστικές οι οποίες αναφέρονται σε ναυτικά, αεροπορικά, τροχαία ατυχήματα και δυστυχήματα καταγράφουν ως τον υπ αριθμόν  ένα γενεσιουργό παράγοντα, τον ανθρώπινο. Βεβαίως, αποφεύγουν να κατονομάσουν και περιγράψουν ενδελεχώς σε τι συνίσταται και από τι προέκυψε η συμμετοχή του έμψυχου δυναμικού στην προετοιμασία  και δημιουργία του ατυχήματος - δυστυχήματος. Οι διερευνήσεις ναυτικών και αεροπορικών ατυχημάτων περικλείουν μια τεράστια γκάμα ευρημάτων στα οποία η εμπλοκή του ανθρώπινου παράγοντα είναι αναμφισβήτητη. Το ζητούμενο στην περίπτωση της ανθρώπινης συμμετοχής στην ωρίμανση και εν τέλει εκδήλωση ενός ατυχήματος - δυστυχήματος είναι αν αποτελεί ευθύνη των άμεσα εμπλεκομένων ή η αστοχία πηγάζει από  αδυναμίες και κενά υψηλότερων διοικητικών / διαχειριστικών κλιμακίων
