The container ship Maersk Patras caught fire on 90 nautical miles east-south-east off Las Palmas, Canary Islands.
The
flamed erupted in engine room during a voyage from Algeciras, Spain to
Conakry, Guinea. The crew succeeded to close the compartment and
activate the CO2 firefighting system. The fire was extinguished, but
caused damages to the generators and propulsion system. The container
carrier Maersk Patras remained adrift in Atlantic Ocean and requested
assistance from the local authorities. At the scene was dispatched
salvage tug, which towed the ship to Las Palmas for repair works and
special inspection.
“The crew is safe, there have been no injuries, and there has been no environmental impact. We have informed the crew’s relatives and the relevant local authorities”, said the spokesman of Maersk Line. “We are working on contingency plan for the cargo on board the vessel”, added he.
The investigation and assessment of damaged caused by the fire will be done at Las Palmas, where were already deployed officials from the company operator. There were no injured people during the incident and no damages of the cargo on board.
Container ship Maersk Patras (IMO: 9168221) has overall length of 210.10 m, moulded beam of 32.20 m and maximum draft of 11.70 m. The deadweight of the vessel is 37,842 DWT and the gross tonnage is 31,333 GRT. The ship was built in 1998 by Nordic Yards Warnemunde in Rostock, Germany.
