Turkey-US Manbij deal foresees 3-phase plan

By   Selen Temizer, Mohamad Misto  and  Levent Tok ANKARA The terrorists nested along the western bank of Euphrates River in northern Syria will be repelled in one month, according to a plan worked out by the U.S. and Turkey. The Manbij plan is expected to come into force on June 4, according to sources familiar to the meetings between delegations of the two states, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to restrictions on speaking to the media. The Turkish Foreign Ministry said on Friday it had outlined a roadmap for cooperation on Manbij following negotiations with a visiting U.S. delegation to Ankara. The final agreement, however, will be announced during a meeting between Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu and his U.S. counterpart Mike Pompeo on June 4 in Washington, the sources said, adding that some details might change during the meeting, but the main agenda will be preserved. Should the final deal be agreed on June 4, YPG/PKK terrorists will le

The Flotilla to the Gaza Strip

Al Awada vessel to sail from Norway to Gaza On May 20, 2018, a flotilla to the Gaza Strip set off from Norway.  The flotilla is organized by two umbrella organizations engaged in dispatching flotillas to the Gaza Strip as part of the campaigns to “break the siege” on the Gaza Strip (“Freedom Flotilla Coalition” and the “International Committee for Breaking the Siege of Gaza”).   The flotilla includes four boats which are expected to reach Gaza by late July 2018.  According to the organizers, on board the boats are Palestinians from the diaspora and European activists.  In addition, passengers include at least two women  with Israeli citizenship  (for details see below). The flotilla set off while the events of the “Great Return March” in the Gaza Strip are expected to continue even after May 15, 2018.   In the ITIC’s assessment, the arrival of the boats in the Gaza Strip is coordinated between Hamas and anti-Israel activists in Europe , as part of the battle for hearts a

A year after assault on Marawi City, residents still unable to return

http://www.unhcr.org C onflict drove 360,000 Filipinos from their homes last May. Months after the city was liberated, destruction and unexploded bombs prevent many from going home. MARAWI CITY  Philippines  Plant sciences student Saadodin Riga was studying at the university in this Philippine city when militants launched their offensive a year ago. As gun battles raged in the streets, and militants seized public buildings, including the hospital, the quiet 19-year-old made his way across town, trying to locate his parents and eight siblings. As the fighting spread, his family abandoned their home, fleeing with just the clothes on their back. They finally caught up with Saadodin later in the day in the outskirts of the city, now under a pall of smoke. There he found his younger brother Saminodin, aged nine, who has seizures and is unable to walk. “I had to carry him on my back while we fled,” Saadodin says. “As we were fleeing, bombs started falling from the

THE LONGEST RIVERS IN THE ALPS

The most powerful and by far the longest alpine river at 1,232 kilometers is the Rhine.  It rises in the Swiss canton of Grisons, where the Vorder- and Hinterrhein unite.  The Rhine forms the border between Switzerland and Liechtenstein and further downstream between Switzerland and Austria before flowing through Lake Constance.  The outflow from Lake Constance near Stein am Rhein begins the Upper Rhine, which forms the border between Switzerland in the south and Germany in the north.  Beyond Basel, the Upper Rhine becomes navigable and joins the Franco-German border river before it becomes Central and Lower Rhine, crosses the German-Dutch border and finally flows into the North Sea near Rotterdam, around Europe's largest seaport. In the Julian Alps, in the area around the Triglav in Slovenia, springs the second longest alpine river, the Sava.  It is the largest river in Slovenia and Croatia, whose capitals Ljubljana and Zagreb flow through it.  Finally, after Bosnia-Herzeg

Admiral Kuznetsov

What happens when your only aircraft carrier breaks down off the coast of Spain in very rough seas?  Call the big tugboat that’s been shadowing you for just such an occasion and attempt a tow.  The result is this well, stomach turning video that shows the Russian tug  Nikolay Chiker attempting a tow operation on the  Admiral Kuznetsov,  Russia’s only aircraft carrier. The event happened in 2012 as the  Admiral Kuznetsov  and its escorts were sailing through the Mediterranean towards Syria as a show of support for the embattled Assad regime in Syria. Russia kept the breakdown story under wraps, until this video was posted this week. Really it comes as no surprise as the  Admiral Kuznetsov , which is a relic of the end of the Cold War, is no stranger to  deadly breakdowns ,  fires  and  oil spills. Still, the Admiral Kuznetsov’s woes are a reminder of how challenged Russia remains when it comes to rebuilding a reliable “blue water” navy. Things are changing though, and

BTK to provide economic boost for region’s development – Bulgarian Transport Ministry (Exclusive)

Baku, Azerbaijan,  May 21 By  Leman Zeynalova  The Baku - Tbilisi – Kars (BTK) railway route will provide an economic boost for the development of the region, Bulgarian Transport Ministry told Trend. "Our country aim to provide suitable land and sea routes to serve the Euro-Asian traffic from the new railway corridor. Our analyzes show that construction of a railway line along the Baku - Tbilisi - Kars route as part of the Silk Road will offer an alternative to the route through Russia and will provide an economic boost for the development of the region," said the ministry. The new link is expected to reduce the travel time between China and Europe with about 15 days, which is more than twice as fast compared to the sea route and at the half of the cost of air transport, according to the Bulgarian Transport Ministry. "In this connection, the Bulgarian side participated actively in the discussions on the new project of the multimodal transport corridor

Bulgaria, Serbia ink deal for gas interconnector

The interconnector will for the first time link the gas systems of Bulgaria and Serbia, European Commission says By  Ebru Sengul Anadolu Agency A joint commitment to implement a gas interconnector between Bulgaria and Serbia was signed on Thursday, the European Commission (EC) said in a statement. The Energy Minister of Bulgaria, Temenuzhka Petkova, and the Energy Minister of Serbia, Aleksandar Antic signed the agreement during the EU-Western Balkans summit in Sofia, Bulgaria. The interconnector is expected to boost the diversification of energy sources in the Western Balkan region, reduce dependency on one dominant supplier and increase energy security, which will for the first time link the gas systems of Bulgaria and Serbia, the EC noted. The project forms part of the EU’s Projects of Common Interest and is a priority in the context of the Central and South Eastern Europe Energy Connectivity High Level Group (CESEC), EC said, adding it contributes to the Serbia

EU commissioner in Iran in bid to protect trade ties

www.afp.com EU Energy Commissioner Miguel Arias Canete arrived in Tehran on Saturday to present plans for continuing oil and gas purchases and protect European companies despite renewed US sanctions on Iran. Canete was due to meet Iran's Atomic Energy Organisation head Ali Akbar Salehi, Environment Minister Isa Kalantari and Oil Minister Bijan Namdar Zanganeh on Saturday. Talks with Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif were scheduled for Sunday. He is the first Western official to visit Iran since President Donald Trump announced he was pulling the US out of the 2015 nuclear deal, and would reimpose sanctions, that are expected to hit European firms hardest. Although European leaders have made firm vows to maintain the deal, many of their companies -- including France's Total and Holland's Maersk -- have already said it will be impossible to stay in Iran once US sanctions are fully reimposed over the next six months. Iran's trade with the European Uni

Pirates burn, beat, and toss fishermen overboard off Suriname: survivors

Ένας από τους υπόπτους για την "σφαγή" www.reuters.com Pirates burned Guyanese fishermen with hot oil, attacked them with machetes and forced them overboard tied to anchors in a fatal attack in the Atlantic Ocean off the neighboring South American nation of Suriname, according to survivors. The assault in late April on four fishing boats 30 miles (48 km) from the coast was described by Guyana’s President David Granger as a “massacre” and a major setback to curbing piracy long rife in the waters off both nations. Of the twenty fishermen attacked, 12 are still missing, five survived and three bodies have been found. Eighteen Guyanese men have been arrested for what is thought to be a revenge attack. Survivor Deonarine Goberdhan, 47, has fished for three decades and is used to interacting with other vessels, so at first was not surprised when another boat approached. Yet, the people onboard had obscured their faces with rags, leaving only their eyes uncovered,

On signing the memorandum at the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) in London, ITF general secretary Stephen Cotton said: “We at the ITF are committed to ensuring seafarers are protected all around the world. This is a significant opportunity to work with our partners in the UAE to bring seafarers and workers’ safety to forefront of the conversation. “This agreement is just the beginning and will hopefully pave the way for similar agreements in other territories. We are keen to work for greater cooperation, in all areas of transportation.” Dr Abdullah Belheif Al Nuaimi, Minister of Infrastructure Development and Chairman of the FTA Board of Directors, spoke at the event: “This agreement allows us to consult, co

Total may need to offload Iran gas stake amid looming US sanctions, analysts

www.thenational.ae French oil major could consider selling its holding to partner CNPC French oil major Total may have to consider options to sell its stake in a $4.8bn Iranian gas deal to its partners to avoid being slapped with US sanctions following the Donald Trump's administration withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal, analysts said. Total has a 50.1 per cent stake in the 20-year South Pars project, alongside China National Petroleum Corp, which holds a 30 per cent and Iran’s Petropars with a 19.9 per cent stake. "Total would require applying for the US sanction exemption. However, approving such an exemption by the US treasury seems unlikely and Total will very likely have to pull out of the South Pars Phase 11 project and pass its share to CNPC," said Siamak Adibi, head of Middle East gas team at consultancy FGE. "However, CNPC will also likely comply with the US sanctions too and will either withdraw or play for time." On Wednesday
